IATA outlook 2024 with low oil prices

The global airline industry has demonstrated remarkable resilience and recovery in recent years, with operating margins showing significant improvement despite various challenges. After experiencing severe losses during 2020-2021, the industry has rebounded strongly, achieving an operating margin of 6.4% in 2024 and projecting 6.7% for 2025. This recovery is particularly noteworthy given the historical correlation between operating margins and jet fuel prices, as illustrated in the following chart, which shows how declining fuel prices since 2022 have supported the industry’s profitability.

The industry’s financial performance has been bolstered by several key factors, including lower oil prices, which have dropped to around USD 70 per barrel, helping offset rising costs in other areas such as labor and maintenance. Airlines are expected to generate a net profit of USD 31.5 billion in 2024, with a 3.3% net profit margin, improving to USD 36.6 billion and a 3.6% margin in 2025. This financial improvement comes despite significant challenges, including capacity constraints due to supply chain issues and aircraft delivery delays.

Looking ahead, the industry faces both opportunities and challenges as it navigates the transition toward sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) and manages ongoing geopolitical tensions. While airline revenues are projected to surpass USD 1 trillion for the first time in 2025, marking a significant milestone, the sector’s profitability remains below the cost of capital. This financial dynamic, coupled with persistent supply chain issues and potential policy shifts following the US presidential election, continues to pose risks to the industry’s outlook, even as it maintains its trajectory of recovery.
